# Pelton turbine System Erlach: Josef Erlach, inventor

Josef Erlach has worked on water turbines since 1963. Out of forty years of design, measurement and standardisation came the Pelton System Erlach: the horizontal Pelton turbine with up to six nozzles.

This page is about **System Erlach**: the horizontal Pelton turbine with up to six nozzles designed by Josef Erlach. What holds for every Pelton turbine is marked “Pelton turbine” in the heading. The difference is explained in the overview [Pelton turbine](https://www.erlach-erlach.com/en/pelton-turbine/) System Erlach.

## Josef Erlach: technician, designer, inventor

Josef Erlach, born in 1939, is a mechanical engineering technician specialising in Pelton turbines. He has worked at Escher Wyss, Sulzer Escher Wyss, VA Tech Escher Wyss and Andritz Hydro: in design and calculation, on measurements in the power plant and in the search for the causes of damage. For around 25 years he contributed to the international standards for water turbines.

Six patent families on the Pelton turbine go back to him: one from his time at Sulzer, five on the System Erlach. He works with drawings, tables and characteristic curves, to this day.

## Pelton turbine System Erlach: Pelton turbine with six nozzles on a horizontal shaft

The principle that allows a horizontal Pelton turbine to take six nozzles goes back to Josef Erlach. How it works is explained under [Pelton turbine](https://www.erlach-erlach.com/en/pelton-turbine/) System Erlach. The property rights are listed under [Pelton turbine patents](https://www.erlach-erlach.com/en/pelton-turbine/patents/), the measurements and the works of others under [Pelton turbine research](https://www.erlach-erlach.com/en/pelton-turbine/research/).

## Philipp Erlach: managing director, co-inventor, co-author

Philipp Erlach, born in 1975, runs Erlach & Erlach GmbH in Ravensburg. He studied philosophy and literary studies in Freiburg, Paris and Frankfurt am Main. He is co-inventor of the Pelton turbine with suction inlets and co-author of the publications of 2014, 2016 and 2026.
